The Midwest of America doesn’t have the easiest time of it when it comes to reputation. In fact, the area is best known as “flyover country”; i.e. the place people see from the air while flying from New York to California.

However, as a keen traveller, you’re no doubt aware that sometimes the best places to visit are hidden gems. The Midwest has plenty to offer to travellers, even if its cities and sites aren’t quite as well known as their coastal cousins.

If you want to discover the delights the Midwest has to offer, then here are a few places you might want to start…

If you’re a fan of water sports or just love a beautiful view, then the Lake of the Ozarks is the perfect choice for you.

This beautifully peaceful lake offers a plethora of activities to enjoy, from mountain biking to horseback riding— so you’ll never be short of something to do.

If you want to take to the water yourself, then rent a boat from the shoreline and set sail.

You’ll likely want to stay in the surrounding areas, close enough to the lake to day trip to when you wish. Look for accommodation options in Camdenton or Climax Springs, or Jefferson City if you’d prefer to stay in a bigger area.

Just be sure to book ahead if you want to visit during the summer months; the lake is popular, and accommodation is in short supply during the peak season.

Indianapolis, Indiana

If you asked someone to name you a piece of trivia about Indiana, they’d likely come up blank, aside from the occasional reference to Parks and Recreation.

Indiana just isn’t a well-talked about state that demands a place in the national consciousness, and its state capital Indianapolis is even less talked of.

However, Indianapolis is a city well worth visiting. There’s plenty of fantastic accommodation to enjoy, including high-end options like the Indianapolis Marriott North.

The city is also easy to explore on foot and has a canal system that offers a delightful riverside experience enjoying the many bars and cafes.

Indianapolis might not be a city with a reputation the size of New York’s, but it’s still a cosmopolitan city that you won’t regret taking the chance to visit.

Door County, Wisconsin

This county in Wisconsin is the setting for eleven different villages and towns, all of which have a unique quaint charm that you just won’t find from the big coastal locations.

If you’re an outdoor adventurer, then Door County is a must-visit, as there’s plenty to keep you entertained in the region.

You can hike through the wilderness trails or take boating expeditions onto Lake Superior, then head onto the shore to explore the wineries and local cuisine during the evening.

For a quiet vacation in a beautiful spot, Door County won’t disappoint.

In conclusion

The Midwest may be dismissed as “flyover country”, but there’s plenty to see and do here. Whether you’re a fan of the outdoor life or want to visit an impressive Midwestern metropolis, there’s plenty of reasons to visit this unique part of the USA.
