I know I love you tell you how and what to pack on your travels, but I must admit I had a packing disaster. I claim to be a packing pro, but it all went wrong this time. I know you are probably laughing as you knew it, I couldn’t be that organised. This blog post is why not to pack full-size toiletries in your luggage.

Why Not to Pack Full-Size Toiletries in Your Luggage
Well, I messed up, overpacked, brought way too many full-sized toiletries in heavy packaging. What was I thinking! Somehow I managed to get away with my luggage being overweight, I was very lucky.
It went on a short flight from Genoa to London, so when I got to England I needed to repack for my next flight to Seattle, as I knew I was not going to get away with my overweight luggage again.
I was racking my brain why is my luggage overweight? I have not brought anything different to the last time. Then a light bulb went off, it’s the toiletries!
It is amazing how much the packing weighs and, I didn’t need a whole bottle of everything for a three-month trip. When I’m packing, I need to practice what I preach!

Why You Must Always Decant into Smaller Bottles Your Toiletries when Travelling
I went to my local branch of Boots (like Walgreens for my US readers) and bought some new small plastic bottles to decant what I needed for my trip. I would normally order from Amazon, but I didn’t have time for them to be delivered!
These bottles were 100ml, 50ml and 30ml in size. Then the shock came how much was really in some of my products, not a lot! The packaging just makes it look bigger and heavier than what is really inside the bottle.
Anyway, I ended up saving a lot of space and weight and got my luggage back to under 23kg for my flight.
Moral of the Story
The moral to the story is to always decant into smaller bottles or buy travel size toiletries. I prefer to decant and reuse my small bottles. All these bottles will be coming home with me empty, so they will weigh nothing. Then I can use them again on my next trip.
4 Pro Tips for Packing Toiletries in Your Luggage
- Decant all toiletries into small bottles or jars
- Label Bottles (with waterproof labels if using in the shower)
- Cover the top of the bottle with a small piece of clingfilm (clingwrap) before screwing the lid on. This prevents leaks.
- Double leak prevention put bottles into Ziploc bags to prevent any leaks and then into a wash bag. This way if there is a leak the product will not go all over your clothes.
