Packing for an Alaska cruise can feel a little overwhelming.
Unlike a warm-weather cruise, where you can throw a few dresses, sandals and swimsuits into your suitcase, packing for an Alaska cruise is all about layers.
You may experience sunshine, rain, wind and chilly temperatures—sometimes all on the same day!
Then there are sea days, glacier viewing, shore excursions and evenings onboard to think about.
The good news is that you don’t need to take your entire wardrobe.
The secret is to create an Alaska cruise capsule wardrobe with clothes that work together, that can be layered and can be worn in several different ways.

What Is an Alaska Cruise Capsule Wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothes that coordinate with each other.
Instead of packing seven completely different daytime outfits and seven completely different evening outfits, you choose pieces that can be mixed, matched and layered.
For an Alaska cruise, this works particularly well because layering is so important.
A pair of trousers might be worn with a T-shirt on a mild day, with a long-sleeved top and fleece when it’s cooler, and with a sweater and waterproof jacket when the weather changes.
The result is several different Alaska cruise outfits from a relatively small number of clothes.
It also means less luggage—which is always a bonus!
Choose Your Alaska Cruise Capsule Wardrobe Colours
Before you start putting clothes into your suitcase, choose your colour palette.
This is one of my favourite ways to avoid overpacking.
The trick is sticking to a colour theme; this way, you cannot go wrong.
When you pack any capsule wardrobe, it is all about picking a colour theme so you can mix and match your clothes.
First, pick the colours for your capsule wardrobe. You will need base colours for pants/skirts/shorts.
Then 2/3 colours for tops/tees/sweaters/cardigans.
For example, you pick black and navy blue for all your bottoms and white, red, and green for your tops.
This means not adding any random colours that don’t match anything.
Start with one or two neutral base colours.
For example:
Navy + black
Then add one or two lighter neutrals:
White + cream
Finally, choose a couple of accent colours:
Red + light blue
Now most of the pieces in your suitcase will work together.
A navy pair of trousers could be worn with a white T-shirt, red sweater, striped top or light blue shirt.
Change your scarf, jewellery or jacket and you have another outfit without adding much more to your suitcase.
You don’t have to use these colours, of course. Choose colours you love wearing and already have in your wardrobe.
The important thing is that everything coordinates.
How to Layer Clothes for an Alaska Cruise
If there is one thing to remember when planning what to wear on an Alaska cruise, it is this:
Pack layers.
Alaska weather can change quickly, and the temperature can feel very different depending on whether you’re walking around a port, standing outside watching a glacier or sitting inside the ship.
I like to think of Alaska cruise outfits in three layers.
Base Layer
Start with something lightweight next to your skin:
- T-shirt
- Vest/tank top
- Long-sleeved top
- Thermal top on colder days
Mid-Layer
Add warmth with:
- Sweater
- Cardigan
- Fleece
- Lightweight knit
Outer Layer
Finish with:
- Lightweight puffer or insulated jacket
- Waterproof rain jacket
The beauty of this system is that you can remove layers as the day warms up and put them back on when you need them.

What to Wear During the Day on an Alaska Cruise
Daytime clothes should be comfortable and practical.
On sea days, I normally prefer casual trousers or jeans with a T-shirt or long-sleeved top and a cardigan.
If you’re going outside on deck, you can simply add your jacket.
A typical daytime Alaska cruise outfit could be:
Casual trousers + T-shirt + cardigan + trainers
or:
Jeans + long-sleeved top + fleece + lightweight jacket
Comfort is key, especially when you’re spending time walking around the ship or going backwards and forwards between indoor and outdoor areas.
What to Wear in Alaska Cruise Ports
Your port-day outfits will depend on what you plan to do.
For sightseeing in towns such as Juneau, Ketchikan or Skagway, comfortable walking shoes are essential.
I would wear something like:
Casual trousers + T-shirt + fleece + waterproof jacket + comfortable walking shoes
Carry a backpack or small day bag so you have somewhere to put layers when you take them off.
Your waterproof jacket should be light enough to pack into your day bag if the weather improves.
If you’re going on a more active excursion, check the excursion information before you leave home. You may need hiking shoes, waterproof trousers or additional warm clothing.
My favourite brand of clothing that I use on an Alaskan cruises are The North Face for jackets, fleeces, gloves, and backpacks.
What to Wear for Glacier Viewing
Glacier viewing is one of those times when you’ll be very happy you packed warm layers.
You may spend quite a long time outside on deck, and it can feel much colder than it does when you’re walking around a port.
My glacier-viewing outfit would be:
Base layer + sweater or fleece + lightweight puffer + waterproof outer layer
Add:
- Warm hat
- Gloves
- Scarf
- Warm socks
- Comfortable shoes
You can always remove a layer if you get too warm.
Don’t forget your camera or phone—and binoculars are also useful for spotting wildlife and seeing distant scenery.
What to Wear on Sea Days
Sea days are generally relaxed.
You don’t need a special outfit. Comfortable casual clothing that can be layered is ideal.
Try:
Trousers + casual top + cardigan + trainers
You might be having coffee inside one minute and walking around the open deck the next, so keeping a sweater or jacket nearby makes life much easier.
If your ship has an indoor or heated pool, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit and cover-up.
Alaska Cruise Outfits for the Evening
One of the most common questions I hear is:
What do you wear to dinner on an Alaska cruise?
The answer depends on your cruise line and the restaurant, but evenings onboard are generally a good opportunity to change out of your daytime sightseeing clothes.
For smart casual evenings, I like to pack pieces that can be mixed and matched.
For example:
Smart trousers + blouse + cardigan + flats
Skirt + smart top + flats
Simple dress + cardigan + jewellery
Again, you don’t need a completely different outfit every evening.
Pack a few smart tops that work with the same trousers or skirt and change your accessories.

What to Wear on Formal Night on an Alaska Cruise
Whether you need formal clothes will depend on your cruise line, so always check the dress code before you pack.
You certainly don’t need to fill your suitcase with evening gowns.
For a capsule wardrobe, I would pack one versatile formal or cocktail dress if my cruise has a formal or dressy evening.
Change the look with:
- Jewellery
- A scarf or wrap
- Different shoes
- A clutch bag
You can easily wear the same dress more than once if necessary.
Alternatively, smart trousers and an elegant top may be appropriate depending on your cruise line’s dress code.

What Shoes Should You Pack for an Alaska Cruise?
Shoes can take up a huge amount of space in your suitcase, so don’t pack more than you need.
For a 7-day Alaska cruise, I would concentrate on four types:
Waterproof Walking Shoes
These are one of the most useful pairs of shoes you can bring.
Choose something comfortable enough to wear all day and suitable for wet pavements and shore excursions.
Trainers/Sneakers
Ideal for sea days, travelling and walking around the ship.
Flats
A pair of ballet pumps or comfortable flats works well for casual evenings.
Smart Shoes
Pack one pair of heels or smarter flats if you’re dressing up for dinner or formal night.
The key is making sure your evening shoes work with all your evening outfits.
Don’t Forget a Waterproof Jacket
A waterproof jacket is one of my Alaska cruise packing essentials.
Look for something lightweight enough to layer over a sweater, fleece or puffer jacket.
A waterproof outer shell is particularly useful because it doesn’t have to be your main source of warmth.
Your layers provide the warmth and your outer jacket protects you from rain and wind.
This gives you much more flexibility than relying on one enormous winter coat.
Alaska Cruise Accessories to Pack
Accessories don’t take up much room but can make a big difference.
I recommend packing:

A scarf is especially useful because it provides extra warmth and can also change the look of an outfit.
Alaska Cruise Essentials You Don’t Want to Forget
Your Alaska cruise packing list isn’t only about clothes.
There are a few other items that are particularly useful on an Alaska itinerary.
Binoculars
Alaska is all about the scenery and wildlife. Binoculars are fantastic for spotting whales, eagles and other wildlife from the ship or during excursions.
Reusable Water Bottle
Useful both onboard and during long shore-excursion days.
Portable Charger
Taking photographs and videos can quickly drain your phone battery, so I always like having a portable charger with me.

Sunscreen
Don’t assume you won’t need sunscreen because you’re going somewhere cooler. You’ll still spend plenty of time outside.
Lip Balm
Wind and cool air can dry your lips surprisingly quickly.

You need somewhere to keep your camera, water bottle, umbrella and the layers you inevitably take off during the day.

May is the beginning of the main Alaska cruise season and can still feel chilly.
Concentrate on warm layers.
Pack:
- Long-sleeved tops
- Sweaters and fleece
- Lightweight puffer jacket
- Waterproof jacket
- Warm hat
- Gloves
- Scarf
Don’t leave your waterproof footwear at home.
What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise in June
June brings long daylight hours, but you still need to be prepared for changing conditions.
Your Alaska cruise packing list for June should include a mixture of lighter tops and warm layers.
T-shirts are useful underneath sweaters and fleeces, while a waterproof jacket should always be close at hand.
What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise in July
July is often associated with warmer Alaska cruising weather, but that doesn’t mean you should pack as though you’re heading to the Mediterranean!
You still need layers.
Bring T-shirts for warmer periods but keep your fleece, waterproof jacket, lightweight puffer, hat and gloves for cooler days and glacier viewing.
What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise in August
For an Alaska cruise in August, versatility is particularly important.
Pack clothes that work in different weather conditions rather than trying to predict exactly what the weather will do.
Layer T-shirts and long-sleeved tops with sweaters or fleeces, and always have waterproof outerwear available.
What to Pack for an Alaska Cruise in September
September cruises can feel cooler, so warmer layers become even more important.
I would make sure I had:
- Warm sweater or fleece
- Lightweight insulated jacket
- Waterproof outer layer
- Warm hat
- Gloves

You can still pack lighter tops for warmer days and for wearing inside the ship.
