What is there to do in the cruise port of Funchal in Madeira? Funchal is the capital of the island of Madeira. It is located off the northwest coast of Africa and is part of Portugal.

This cruise port has a small terminal that has a shop selling local souvenirs. To get into the city you can either walk, take the shuttle or a taxi to the city centre.

The walk is around 20 minutes into the city centre, the shuttle or a taxi is a lot quicker.

The city of Funchal is a pretty city to walk around, there is a new part of the city that has all the shops and souvenir stores, bar and restaurants. This side of the city is closer to the cruise ship terminal so it is more touristy.

Whilst we were there they had the flower festival on so the streets were covered in flowers with beautiful displays.

If you would like to see more of Funchal walk into the old town for a more traditional experience.

There are narrow streets, with cobblestone roads and a lot of colour. The old fort is bright yellow and there is a street with the doors all painted with different designs.

In the old town, there are many bars and restaurants to choose from. We went to ‘Restaurante Do Forte’, which was in the old fort. The food was absolutely fantastic there.

What tours are there to go on in Funchal?

If you like to go on tours, there are the Madeira botanical gardens to visit, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden, the Funchal Cathedral or a trip up the cable car to get a great view of the city.

Specialities of Madeira

One of the things you may like to try in the cruise port of Funchal is to try a glass of Madeira. It is a sweet wine that is made on the island.

In Portugal, you will find lots of items made of cork, especially handbags and this makes a nice souvenir of the area.
