For some, taking a few days off to relax at home and catch up on abandoned hobbies may be enough, but no one can deny the fun change of pace that travelling to new exciting places brings. A recent survey on global travel found that 51% of Brits plan to go abroad this autumn, and as we inch closer to the end of the year, it becomes even more difficult to fight the holiday urges.
Whatever your reasons for travelling are, you deserve to. Work and daily life can be stressful, after all, and even if you think you can handle the stress of everyday life, it won’t hurt to take a trip as a reward and hopefully come back more productive than before you left. However, it would be best if you didn’t let your break interrupt your healthy living. Today, we’ll look at some of the ways you can stay fit and healthy after your holiday:
Watch what you eat
It’s easy to be on vacation and develop the mindset of “making the most” of your experience and time away from work. As a result, we often eat whatever we want, especially dishes we usually can’t eat at home. While there’s no problem with indulging a little during your holiday, it can be a shock to see some weight gain once you get back home.
Staying on a personalised weight loss programme after your vacation can help you trim down any excess weight you gain. And you wouldn’t necessarily need to deprive yourself either; instead, you would need to develop better habits like eating veggies, drinking water, or moving around more. Using food tracker apps or a journal to track what you eat and ensure you get the optimal nutrient intake can help you stay fit after a holiday without having to take on a strict diet.
Spend time outdoors
There’s no way around it — the best way to regain your fitness after travelling is to spend some time getting active outdoors. Besides, coming home after an exciting trip out of town can feel bleak, and you might immediately miss the vacation place you just left. Spending some time in the sun can provide you with much-needed Vitamin D, and you can take the opportunity to go on a walk or a run to start burning those excess calories.
On top of the instant exercise, spending time outdoors helps deal with jetlag. It’s true — exposing yourself to natural light helps your body adjust faster. Tiring out your body will help you sleep better and feel less disoriented when you wake up.
Get back into your workout routine
It’ll be challenging, but exercise is the best and healthiest way to keep your momentum after a holiday trip. You can give yourself a break from working out while you’re on vacation, but don’t forget to get back into it once you’re back in real life. If you’re not ready to spend your time sweating outdoors yet, start with basic indoor workouts at home. It’ll help your body get used to the routine again, and you might even feel more productive afterwards.
You could also text or call a friend to work out with you post-holiday for that extra boost of motivation. If you want to make things easier for yourself the next time, why not try incorporating some simple workouts while you’re on vacation? It gives you something to do in the mornings, just so your body doesn’t forget what it feels like to exercise. Remember to be kind to yourself — after a long break away from working out, consider picking back up from simple routines instead of immediately forcing yourself into complex regimes.
