A South African Itinerary
Day 1: Explore Johannesburg
After you land at O.R. Tambo International Airport, take a taxi or Uber into the city center. Depending on what time you arrive, you might want to spend the day exploring Johannesburg or just relax at your hotel.
If you’re feeling energetic, start with a visit to the apartheid museum. This highly-rated museum does an excellent job of contextualizing South Africa’s recent history. You can also learn more about Nelson Mandela’s life at his former home, now called the Nelson Mandela House Museum.

Day 2: Soweto Tour
Today, head out on a tour of Soweto, one of South Africa’s largest townships. Your guide will show you around different neighborhoods and tell stories about what life is like here. Be sure to visit Nelson Mandela’s former home in Soweto as well as the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum dedicated to those who lost their lives during the 1976 student uprising.
In the afternoon, take a break from touring and grab some lunch at one of Soweto’s many street food vendors before heading back to your hotel in Johannesburg for the night.

Day 3: Kruger National Park
Today is all about wildlife! Start your drive early to Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s premier game reserves. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffalo, and other animals in their natural habitat on game drives throughout the day. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a leopard or rhino! This Kruger National Park live video will give you an idea of what to expect.
At nightfall, return to your lodge for dinner and maybe even a swim in the pool before turning in for an early night so you can be rested up for another full day tomorrow exploring Kruger National Park!

Day 4: Cape Town
After breakfast, begin the long drive to Cape Town, South Africa’s scenic seaside city. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and spend some time exploring the city center. Visit the Castle of Good Hope, take a ride on the iconic cable car up Table Mountain, or stroll through Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.
In the evening, enjoy a delicious seafood dinner at one of Cape Town’s many restaurants before heading back to your hotel for a good night’s sleep.

Day 5: Robben Island Tour
No trip to Cape Town is complete without a tour of Robben Island, site of a former prison where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated during apartheid. You can take a ferry out to the island for a guided tour led by a former inmate. Be sure to allow plenty of time for this activity as it can be emotionally draining but is also incredibly eye-opening and educational.
