What To Do In The Cruise Port Of Fishguard Wales?

Explore the Coastal Paths

One of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of Fishguard is to explore the coastal paths that wind through the town and beyond.

These paths offer stunning views of the sea and the cliffs and are perfect for both a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike.

One of my favourite walks is the Marine Walk, where you can start from Goodwick Beach and walk all the way to Fishguard town centre.

Also from the Marine Walk, you can take a stroll down to the picturesque Lower Town and admire the colourful houses and quaint harbour, where you can catch a glimpse of the historic quay.

The Dylan Thomas film ‘Under Milk Wood’, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole was filmed in Lower Town.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as seals, dolphins, and birds. You might even spot the occasional ship passing by. If you’re up for an adventure, you can also try your hand at kayaking or paddleboarding along the coast.

Visit the Fishguard Town Centre

The Fishguard town centre is a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute walk from the cruise port. The town centre is a pretty little area with arts and crafts shops, little cafes, pubs and restaurants and essential stores such as pharmacies and supermarkets.

Immerse Yourself in the History of Fishguard

The town has a number of historic sites that are must-visit places for any history lover.

The last invasion of Britain took place near Fishguard in 1797, the French troops were met with resistance from the locals. There was a brave woman from Fishguard called Jemima Nicholas, a cobbler, armed with a pitchfork. She led a group of women in traditional costume and captured twelve French soldiers who had been drinking, and held them captive inside St. Mary’s church overnight.

Here are the historical sights to see in Fishguard:

St. Mary’s Church

  • St. Mary’s Church is one of the oldest buildings in Fishguard dating back to the 12th century. Jemima Nicholas is buried in the churchyard and there is a memorial stone there for her.

Fishguard Fort

  • Fishguard Fort which played a crucial role in the French invasion of 1797. The fort offers stunning views of the sea and the surrounding coastline.

Fishguard Town Hall

  • A visit to Fishguard Town Hall is also highly recommended to see the Last Invasion Tapestry. This stunning work of art details the town’s role in the last invasion of Britain in 1797 and is a must-see for history buffs.

Gorsedd Circle

  • The Gorsedd Circle – Fishguard held the National Eisteddfod in 1936 and 1986, a Welsh competitive festival of music and poetry. These were built to commemorate the event, one in Penslade in 1936 and the other in Lota Park in 1986.

Pentre Ifan

  • Pentre Ifan – This dates back to 3500 BC and is an iconic symbol of ancient pre-Celtic people and their burial chambers.

Castell Henllys

  • Castell Henllys – This is a reconstruction of an Iron Age settlement and shows what life was like for our ancient ancestors.

Visit the Beach

Between the towns of Goodwick and Fishguard is a beautiful unspoilt beach with, which on a nice day you can go swimming or try one of the many water sports on offer. Take a leisurely walk up the breakwater path.

For those with a love of all things nautical, the Ocean Lab offers a unique glimpse into the local marine life, with interactive exhibits and educational displays.

Get a Taste of Traditional Welsh Cuisine

But the true flavour of Fishguard’s culture lies not just in its history and scenery, but in its cuisine. Welsh cuisine is a reflection of the region’s Celtic roots.

Start off by trying a traditional Welsh lamb soup, called Cawl. If you have a sweet tooth, indulge in some Welsh cakes or Bara Brith at one of the local restaurants or cafes.

Explore St. David’s

If you have extra time during your visit to Fishguard, consider exploring the charming neighbouring town of St. David’s.

St. David’s is the smallest city in the UK and is known for its stunning cathedral (the oldest in Wales), and picturesque streets. It’s also home to the Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre, which showcases the work of local artists and provides information about the nearby Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
