Asia is the largest and most populous continent, home to diverse cuisines. Embark on a journey of flavours and these are some dishes you simply can’t miss on your visit.

Japan

The freshness of the ingredients is a key factor that makes Japanese sushi superior. Some of the most famed sushi chefs in Japan go to local fish sellers, such as Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, to pick up the day’s seafood catch.

Another staple, Ramen is a noodle soup consisting of wheat noodles served in a meat or fish broth, flavoured with soy sauce or miso, and topped with meat and vegetables.

Steak is another specialty. Kobe, the world’s most expensive steak, is known for its flavour, tenderness, and fatty, well-marbled texture.

To be sold as Kobe, the meat must meet exacting standards including the Beef Marbling Score (BMS). This limits the amount of Kobe available yearly, hence the expensive price tag.

India

India is a huge country, and every region has its specialities. You could take an India river cruise to explore different areas to treat your tastebuds to its countless delicacies.

In northern India, dishes such as rogan josh and chicken korma are popular, and the area is known for chapati and naan flatbreads.

In the south, locals enjoy rice, lentils, stews, and dosa, a popular breakfast dish. Western India is mostly Hindu and mainly vegetarian.

Goa blends Indian and Portuguese styles as it was once a Portuguese trading port. Food in eastern India is less spicy than in the north. In coastal regions, fish is popular while inland, it’s pork and chicken.

Thailand

Thailand is famous for mouthwatering cuisine, and popular dishes include Tom Yum Goong (a hot and sour shrimp soup) and, of course, Pad Thai.

This delicious fried noodle dish is made with chicken or shrimp and is available from street carts where it’s often cooked in front of you.

One dish that sums up the vitality, freshness and colour of Thai food is Laab, a salad from the northeastern Isaan region

It’s made of ground meat, fresh herbs and green onions and dressed with lime juice, fish sauce, dried chilli flakes and toasted rice powder.

Vietnam

Pho is a tasty broth of rice noodles and meats, such as beef chicken, or seafood. This is eaten at breakfast or lunch and enjoyed by all rungs of society.

There is a French influence from colonial times in Vietnamese food. Banh Mi is a crisp, baguette sandwich filled with cold cuts, pate, herbs, pickled vegetables, and chilli sauce.

A more traditional Asian dish is Mi Quang. Of central Vietnam origin, in Quang Nam province, the dish consists of thick rice noodles and pork, shrimp, quail eggs and herbs.

China

As with India, the vast size of China means it has a diverse culinary offer. With over 50 different ethnic groups represented in the country, you can feast on food with worldwide influences.

Peking duck may seem a cliched Westernised choice, but roasted duck started tantalising taste buds more than 1,500 years ago in Nanjing.

Another Chinese staple is dan-dan noodles. They were first sold over 100 years ago by traders carrying poles (dan dans).

As a Chinese street food experience, nothing beats dan dan noodles topped with rou saozi – finely chopped pork pan-fried in lard until golden brown and crispy.
