So, you now know your iWatch will work onboard the cruise ship, that is great news, but there is a catch!

Not all the functions will work, and this is just like your iPhone – why?

This is because most of your iPhone apps will only work when the phone is connected to the internet, this is the same for the Apple iWatch if you have a non-cellular watch.

The Apple iWatch cellular works in the same way as the iPhone, so if you have no internet/4G signal the watch will have limitations on board a cruise ship.

Whether you are using the ship’s wi-fi or you’re your cell phone international plan this is the only way all functions will work on your phone and watch.

So, when you are using the cruise line internet package, or you are using your own internet access – 4G ashore/onboard when in port all functions will work on your iPhone and iWatch.

This is because the iWatch mirrors the phone using Bluetooth.

What parts of my iWatch will not work when in airplane mode?

When your iPhone is in airplane mode, and you are not connected to the internet your iWatch is mirroring it. The functions/apps that will not work are:

  • Phone calls
  • Text messages
  • Notifications that need the internet, for example, social media notifications
  • WhatsApp
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Email
  • App Store
  • Find devices
  • Find items
  • Find people
  • Maps
  • News
  • Walkie-Talkie
  • Wallet (credit cards will not work)
  • Weather

The only way the above apps will work is if you are connected to the internet on your phone.

What do I do if the time zone changes on my cruise?

If the time zone changes on your cruise this is what you need to do to have the correct time (this can also be done in airplane mode):

1. Change the time zone on your iPhone

2. Go to the mobile app Settings

3. Scroll down to General

4. Scroll down to Date & Time

5. Unselect set automatically

6. Under set automatically set the time zone and change to the city you are going to.

7. Your iWatch will automatically synchronise the new time

8. Very important information: if the time change is daylight savings do not change the time even if you are not connected to the internet as the iPhone will automatically change as it is a built-in feature with the calendar.

Using International Roaming on a Cruise Ship

Depending on where you are cruising and where you are from in the world, be careful using your international roaming on your next port on shore excursions or onboard as you may incur unwanted charges.

A cell plan from the United States and Europe differ a lot in service plans, so always check before you go on your cruise which counties are included in your international roaming plan.

Cruise Ship Wi-Fi

All major cruise lines have a Wi-Fi network that you can use on your mobile device or laptop for email communication, video calling, surfing the net, social media, etc.

But most cruise lines do not have free wi-fi (unless you are incredibly lucky) it is chargeable, and you can buy packages for it.

When you buy your cruise ticket always take advantage of free internet packages, if they are offered.
