So, you’ve seen a single price for a seven-night journey through some stunning destinations, and it seems almost too good to be true. But what does that number actually cover?
Cruising offers fantastic value by bundling many of your holiday costs into one price, but it can feel confusing to understand exactly what you’re getting.
We’re here to demystify cruise pricing. By understanding what’s included and what’s extra, you can choose the right cruise line for your budget and avoid any unwelcome surprises.

This guide will walk you through everything typically included in your fare, from your cabin to your meals and entertainment, as well as what might not be included.
But always remember to read the terms and conditions before booking, as what’s included can differ between cruise lines.

What’s Included as Standard
When you book a cruise, the upfront price typically covers all the essentials for a comfortable and enjoyable trip, including:
- Accommodation: The price includes your room or cabin for the entire duration of the voyage. This covers housekeeping services, which typically visit every day to clean your room, provide fresh towels, and turn down your bed. The type of cabin you choose is one of the biggest factors influencing your total cruise cost. Options range from budget-friendly interior rooms with no windows to oceanview rooms, balcony staterooms, and luxurious multi-room suites.
- Food: One of the best parts of cruising is the food, and your fare includes a wide variety of dining options. You can typically eat three meals a day (plus snacks) without spending any extra pennies.

- Beverages: Basic drinks are also part of all-inclusive packages. You’ll have access to water, coffee, hot and iced tea, and select juices (often available at breakfast in the buffet).
- Activities: Cruise ships are packed with things to do, and most of it is included in your fare. Your days and nights can be filled with a diverse range of activities without ever needing to pull out your wallet. Although some cruise lines provide more entertainment than others, common activities include: live shows, pools and water parks, fitness centres, and sports facilities. There are often daily activities too, such as trivia contests, dance classes, cooking demonstrations, and poolside games, all organised by the cruise staff and included in your fare.
- Kids and teen clubs: Supervised kids’ clubs provide age-appropriate activities like arts and crafts, video games, and dance parties, ensuring fun for kids and relaxation for parents.

What’s Excluded from the Price
With a little planning, you can set sail knowing exactly what to expect. A few other things almost always carry an extra charge, so you’ll need to budget for them. That includes:
- Specialty dining: Beyond the main dining room and buffet, most ships offer “specialty” restaurants. These provide a more intimate or unique culinary experience, such as a high-end steakhouse, a sushi bar, or an Italian trattoria. Dining at these venues typically comes with an additional charge.
- Alcoholic and premium beverages: Unless you’ve purchased an all-inclusive beverage package, certain drinks will cost extra, including alcohol, sodas, and specialty coffees. Cruise lines typically offer drink packages for a fixed daily rate, which can be a good value if you plan to enjoy several drinks per day.

- Shore excursions: When the ship docks at a port, how you spend your day is up to you. You can explore on your own for free, but organised tours and activities, known as shore excursions, are an additional expense. Any cash you need (including money you may need to send) needs to be budgeted for on top of the price of your cruise.
- Daily Gratuity Charges: Most cruise lines automatically add a daily service charge to each guest’s onboard account. Some cruise lines offer the option to prepay gratuities when you book your cruise. These gratuities are for the crew that you see in the front of house, such as waiters and cabin stewards, as well as for some of the crew behind the scenes.

To enjoy a truly worry-free trip, it’s essential to understand exactly what your fare covers and what will incur extra charges.
This knowledge is just the starting point, as inclusions can vary significantly, so make sure you shop around and compare in order to get the best deals.
